Role Overview for Technical Advisor Jobs in Kalumbila
The Mechanical Technical Advisor will specialize in Komatsu loading units including PC8000E-11, PC5500E-6, and PC500-EX models. This role requires expertise in OEM maintenance strategies, continuous upgrades through field campaigns, and registered Technical Service Issues (TSIs). The successful candidate will provide hands-on support for proactive maintenance, troubleshooting, and knowledge transfer to enhance operational efficiency.
The Technical Advisor will play a critical role in supporting the work management process, including work identification, planning, execution, analysis, and feedback. Performance will be measured against world-class KPIs, with targets such as equipment availability of no less than 85% and mean time between failure (MTBF) exceeding 60 hours.
Key Competencies and Responsibilities
- Troubleshooting and Fault Finding:
- Apply hydraulic troubleshooting techniques to diagnose erratic motions and out-of-spec parameters.
- Lead defect elimination initiatives promoting a “zero defects” culture across the fleet.
- Ensure thorough diagnosis and repair of equipment failures, completing root cause analyses to prevent recurrence.
- Prepare and submit technical reports, including RCA, failure, and trend wear reports.
- Planned Maintenance Activities:
- Track defects in the CMMS and collaborate with planners to prioritize and schedule backlog work.
- Audit quality of equipment spares and assess repaired components for acceptance.
- Conduct comprehensive machine inspections and overview reports to improve maintenance quality.
- Use trend analysis to forecast part replacements and schedule maintenance proactively.
- Project Management:
- Lead and oversee complex component change-outs and machine assemblies.
- Plan, execute, monitor, and control component replacements efficiently.
Additional Responsibilities
- Provide technical and logistical support to maintenance and repair teams.
- Guide teams with updated performance data, KPIs, and management recommendations.
- Champion continuous improvement and lead defect elimination across the department.
- Ensure maintenance tasks comply with OEM recommendations and established change management procedures.
- Deliver practical training, mentoring, and performance management for subordinates.
- Develop succession plans to ensure the right talent is in place for critical roles.
Candidate Profile and Behavioral Traits
- Sound mental and physical condition, capable of handling equipment and tools.
- Responsible, focused, self-motivated, and able to work independently under pressure.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cohesively with teams.
- Strong report writing and presentation skills.
- Fluent English speaker.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Millwright, or working towards one.
- Valid Grade 12 certificate or equivalent.
- Extensive hands-on experience with Komatsu PC5500 and PC8000 shovels and excavators.
- Familiarity with Caterpillar CAT7495 Rope Shovels and Liebherr R9250 and R9100 Excavators is an advantage.
- At least 10 years of hydraulic experience, including knowledge of hydraulic principles, component identification, electro-hydraulic systems, troubleshooting, and servicing.
- Experience with maintenance supervision, total process reliability, Microsoft Project, and Six Sigma methodologies is beneficial.
- Proficiency in engineering management software such as Pronto.
- Supervisory experience is an advantage.
- Must hold a valid driver’s licence.
