About WorldFish and the Senior Research Associate Role

WorldFish partners with global, regional, and national stakeholders to deliver scientific innovations and evidence-based policy guidance aimed at improving aquatic food systems. The Senior Research Associate will join the FASA team (Development and Scaling of Sustainable Feeds for Resilient Aquatic Food Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa), a multidisciplinary group focused on developing affordable, sustainable fish feed technologies.

In this role, you will lead and oversee daily research operations both in the laboratory at NRDC and in the field. Responsibilities include ensuring strict adherence to research protocols, managing equipment and supplies, supervising data collection, and fostering collaboration among teams, stakeholders, and communities to support impactful research outcomes.

Key Responsibilities for Senior Research Associate Jobs in Lusaka

• Lead and perform routine laboratory and field research tasks including feeding experimental fish, monitoring health and behavior, and measuring water quality parameters.
• Maintain, prepare, and repair laboratory materials and equipment essential for wet lab experiments and fish handling.
• Supervise sample collection and processing to ensure proper preparation for analysis.
• Collect, record, compile, and verify research data using digital tools, and assist with basic data analysis and reporting.
• Coordinate and guide the collection of routine and experimental data to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Support scaling of FASA activities and contribute to planning conferences, workshops, and technology transfer events.
• Assist in preparing progress reports, scientific publications, and dissemination of project results.
• Supervise team members during research operations, ensuring efficiency and adherence to standards.
• Engage with stakeholders including local authorities and community members to promote collaboration and awareness.
• Maintain organized, safe, and compliant laboratory and field workspaces, including inventory and waste management.
• Monitor and maintain water quality and equipment calibration to meet research requirements.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Fish Feeds and Nutrition, Biology, Aquaculture, Fisheries, or related field; Master’s degree is an advantage.
• Proven experience conducting experimental fish research in laboratory and/or field settings.
• Proficiency in routine research procedures, data collection using digital devices, and equipment operation and maintenance.
• Ability to identify fish species and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; knowledge of Zambian local languages is a plus.
