Role Overview for Senior Metallurgist Jobs in Solwezi

We seek a highly qualified metallurgist and metals consultant with a proven record in grinding media development. The consultant will provide expert support to finalise alloy chemistries, heat-treatment processes, billet and charge-material strategies, and quality assurance systems. The role includes collaborating closely with our international EPC technology partner to ensure the plant’s metallurgy is fully de-risked before commissioning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Validate and lock alloy chemistries and heat-treatment recipes for forged and high-chromium cast steel grades, including forging reduction and quench-and-temper methods.
  • Assess and qualify billet and charge-material procurement specifications and suppliers; verify mill certificates against standards.
  • Develop comprehensive product specifications and testing protocols, including hardness, impact, drop-ball, microstructure, and dimensional controls.
  • Evaluate the plant laboratory capabilities and design an ISO 9001-aligned quality management system with batch traceability.
  • Serve as the owner’s technical liaison during installation, commissioning, and acceptance testing phases.
  • Lead customer engagement and co-creation through plant trials and wear-rate benchmarking at mining sites in Zambia and the DR Congo.
  • Document standard operating procedures, mentor the in-house technical team, and facilitate a structured handover to the permanent Head of Metallurgical and Metals.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • BEng or BSc in Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy and Mineral Processing, or Materials Science and Engineering from a recognised institution.
  • Registered Engineer with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ/EngRB) holding a valid Practising Licence, or demonstrably registrable prior to commencement.
  • At least 15 years of post-qualification experience, including senior roles in large-scale grinding media or steel billet manufacturing plants involving forging, foundry, and heat treatment.
  • Proven expertise in induction melting, alloy charge control, high-chromium white cast irons, forged-ball production, and quench-and-temper practices.
  • Experience serving large-scale mining operations in Zambia, the DR Congo, or comparable jurisdictions, including grinding media performance evaluation.
  • Fluent knowledge of ASTM, ISO, and GB standards for grinding media and steel bars, as well as mill-certificate interpretation and spectrographic analysis.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

  • Postgraduate degree (MSc or higher) in metallurgy or materials engineering.
  • Membership of ACEZ and SAIMM, especially for consulting engineers.
  • Experience with ISO 9001 implementation or lead-auditor certification.
  • Previous technical involvement in bankable feasibility studies or projects financed by development finance institutions.
  • Valid silicosis or medical fitness certificate for mine-site access.
  • Familiarity with Chinese-origin plant technology and GB-standard documentation; multilingual abilities for regional communication.
