Zambia Sugar Plc, the leading sugar producer in Zambia and an ABF Sugar Company, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Safety Spotter based in Mazabuka, Southern Zambia. This role is offered on a Fixed Term Contract (FTC) at Project Twazabuka and focuses on supporting all SHERQ (Safety, Health, Environment, Risk, and Quality) activities to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.
About Zambia Sugar PLC and the Safety Spotter Role
Zambia Sugar Plc specializes in the cultivation of sugar cane, production of high-quality sugar, and the development of downstream products. The Safety Spotter will report directly to the SHERQ Manager and play a critical role in identifying and mitigating workplace safety risks to ensure adherence to company safety policies and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities for Safety Spotter Jobs in Mazabuka
- Conduct daily patrols to identify and report unsafe acts and conditions to project management and the SHERQ team.
- Perform regular health and safety inspections, including Daily Safety Inspections (DSI) and near-miss reporting, to reduce workplace hazards.
- Lead Planned Task Observations (PTOs) and Critical Control Verification (CCV) programs focusing on nine Critical Life Saving (CLS) Rules to promote operational discipline.
- Review and assess contractors’ safety documentation such as method statements, risk assessments, and safe work procedures to ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Drive continuous improvement through accident prevention initiatives and behaviour-based safety campaigns.
- Communicate effectively with employees, stakeholders, and contractors regarding their safety responsibilities in line with Zambia Sugar’s SHERQ policies.
- Facilitate HSE training sessions, toolbox talks, and behavioural safety awareness programs to enhance the safety culture.
- Ensure alignment of the ABF Integrated Risk Management System (IRMS) with site-level procedures for operational effectiveness.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills using constructive and logical approaches.
- Maintain flexibility to work varied hours and respond promptly to emergencies.
- Promote and enforce ABFS policies including SHERQ & Food Safety, Competition Law, and Anti-Bribery & Corruption (ABC).
Qualifications and Experience Required
- Grade 12 Certificate or equivalent qualification.
- Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent; a degree in Occupational Health and Safety from a reputable institution is highly desirable.
- NEBOSH Construction Certificate is an added advantage.
- Membership with professional bodies such as ZOHSA, HPCZ, or the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ).
- At least two years of safety experience in agribusiness, manufacturing, construction, or mining industries.
- Strong project management acumen with the ability to anticipate and interpret changes affecting health and safety programs.
- Familiarity with OHS&E systems, preferably ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management standards.
- Qualifications must be verified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
