The International Crane Foundation, in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Zambia and WWF US under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) 8th replenishment cycle, invites applications for the position of Safeguards and Gender (SG) Officer. This contract role supports two key projects—the Kafue Flats Climate Resilience and Adaptation Project (KaF-Adapt) and the Kafue Flats Wildlife, Habitat, Health and Livelihoods Project (KaF-Wild)—which focus on enhancing climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable livelihoods in the Kafue Flats Ecosystem.

About the Safeguards and Gender Officer Role

Reporting to the Project Manager, the Safeguards and Gender Officer will play a pivotal role in ensuring environmental and social safeguards, gender mainstreaming, and effective stakeholder engagement across both projects. This position is based in Zambia and offers a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful conservation and community development initiatives.

Key Responsibilities for Safeguards and Gender Officer Jobs in Zambia

  • Safeguards and Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Lead the implementation of the Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) for both projects, including screening budgets and work plans, conducting stakeholder consultations, and developing safeguard documents as needed.
    • Coordinate and monitor the Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP) under the Project Manager’s supervision.
    • Establish and manage a combined Complaint and Feedback Response Mechanism to address project-related concerns effectively.
    • Facilitate compliance with government environmental clearance requirements and assist agencies in securing approvals.
    • Organize health and safety precautions following International Crane Foundation policies.
    • Prepare Semi-Annual ESMF Compliance Reports and contribute to annual project implementation reporting.
  • Gender Mainstreaming:
    • Review and support the Gender Action Plan (GAP) for both KaF-Wild and KaF-Adapt projects, identifying areas needing additional gender-responsive support.
    • Lead and track GAP implementation in collaboration with the Project Manager and Technical Coordinator.
    • Review annual work plans and budgets to ensure integration of gender considerations.
    • Provide updates on gender-related activities to support project results frameworks and work plan tracking.
  • General Project Support:
    • Conduct capacity building to strengthen implementation of SEP, GAP, and ESMF throughout the project lifecycle.
    • Participate in missions and technical visits to ensure compliance with environmental and social policies.
    • Perform other duties as assigned to support project success.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
  • At least five years of relevant experience in social science fields focusing on gender, community engagement, and environmental and social safeguards.
  • Knowledge of national laws, regulations, and international standards related to environmental and social safeguards and gender issues.
  • Strong facilitation and participatory skills for stakeholder consultations and planning.
  • Experience with donor-funded projects, traditional leadership, community engagement (including marginalized groups), and multi-sectoral collaboration is advantageous.
  • Conflict management and mitigation skills in community settings are essential.
  • Familiarity with local languages is a plus.
