About The Hunger Project–Zambia and the Food Second Pilot

The Hunger Project–Zambia is a registered NGO operating under the NGO Act of 2009 and affiliated with the Global Hunger Project, which has a presence in 22 countries worldwide. THP-Z is dedicated to ending chronic hunger and poverty by implementing grassroots, women-centered strategies that promote sustainable self-reliance through community-led development.

The Food Second Pilot, funded by The Petre Foundation and SKIP Foundation, targets approximately 530 farmers in the Ching’ombe and Kamwanza wards of Sinda District. The project focuses on increasing production capacity and food security by introducing hybrid seeds, climate-smart farming practices, market linkages, and agri-business training.

Role Summary for Project Agronomist Jobs in Sinda, Zambia

The Project Agronomist will play a vital role in implementing agricultural activities under the Food Second project. Reporting to the Program Manager/Epicenter Project Officer, the successful candidate will facilitate community-led initiatives to empower farmers and strengthen local ownership of agricultural development and food security.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead community training and capacity building in seed management, climate-resilient farming, and agri-business development.
• Support the establishment and management of Farmer Field Schools using participatory, community-driven approaches.
• Assist in developing and operating the Seed Multiplication Centre with local stakeholders.
• Empower farmers to create business plans and establish sustainable market linkages.
• Promote climate-smart agricultural practices through community mobilization and women-centered development strategies.
• Facilitate grassroots action and collective decision-making within farming communities.
• Contribute to monitoring, evaluation, and learning activities with active community participation.
• Collaborate closely with local farmers and stakeholders to enhance self-reliance and local ownership.

Qualifications and Experience

• Diploma in Agronomy, Agriculture, or related disciplines such as Crop Science, Horticulture, Agricultural Extension, or Soil Science.
• Valid motorcycle riding license with the ability to ride a motorbike.
• At least three years of practical experience in agricultural extension, farming systems, or related fieldwork.
• Preferably a resident of Sinda District with knowledge of local languages and familiarity with the area.
• Strong facilitation, communication, and community engagement skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to gender equality, inclusive development, and community empowerment.

Desirable Skills

• Experience in climate-smart agriculture and sustainable farming practices.
• Knowledge of seed multiplication and farmer training methodologies.
• Proven ability to work effectively with smallholder farmers using participatory approaches.
• Understanding of market linkages and agri-business development.
• Experience in community mobilization, facilitation, and community-led development.
• Capacity to build local skills and promote sustainable self-reliance.
