The International Crane Foundation, in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Zambia and WWF US, invites applications for project accountant jobs in Lusaka. This opportunity supports two major initiatives under the Global Environment Facility (GEF) 8th replenishment cycle: the Kafue Flats Climate Resilience and Adaptation Project (KaF-Adapt) and the Kafue Flats Wildlife, Habitat, Health and Livelihoods Project (KaF-Wild). These projects, implemented under the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment and the Ministry of Tourism, aim to enhance climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable livelihoods in the Kafue Flats Ecosystem.

About the Role: Project Accountant

Reporting directly to the Finance Manager, the Project Accountant will play a vital role in managing the financial aspects of both projects. This contract position requires meticulous financial oversight to ensure compliance with donor requirements and to support the successful implementation of these multi-stakeholder environmental initiatives.

Key Responsibilities for Project Accountant Jobs in Lusaka

  • Prepare, administer, and monitor budgets for both projects, maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial records.
  • Track project expenditures against approved budgets and work plans, ensuring correct financial coding and adherence to GEF and WWF financial policies.
  • Compile and submit timely financial reports aligned with donor reporting standards.
  • Support the selection process and conduct financial due diligence for sub-grantees, including risk assessments and mitigation strategies.
  • Administer and monitor agreements with sub-grantees and consultants, ensuring compliance with contractual and organizational policies.
  • Review financial reports from sub-grantees and offer technical assistance to resolve reporting issues.
  • Facilitate annual supervision missions, financial audits, and project evaluations by providing necessary financial documentation.
  • Maintain comprehensive financial and administrative records, including agreements and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with project reporting timelines and donor deadlines.
  • Provide financial and administrative support to the Project Manager and collaborate with the Project Steering Committee, WWF GEF Agency, project partners, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Commerce, Economics, or a related discipline.
  • Professional accounting qualification is an added advantage.
  • At least five years of experience in project administration and financial management.
  • Proven experience in office administration and logistical support for project implementation and stakeholder events.
  • Experience with complex, multi-stakeholder projects funded by GEF, other donors, or development organizations is desirable.
  • Familiarity with supporting annual financial audits and finance-related processes is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and accounting software packages.
  • Strong report writing and communication skills.
