This role is integral to supporting the health and well-being of rangers, staff, and their families, directly contributing to the success of conservation efforts in one of Zambia’s most important protected areas.

FZS is a global conservation organisation with a longstanding partnership with Zambia’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW). Since 2017, NTCP has focused on protecting biodiversity, supporting endangered species recovery, and fostering community engagement in Nsumbu National Park. As the park’s ecosystem recovers, including the return of lions and plans to reintroduce black rhinos, the health and operational readiness of field teams remain paramount.

The Nurse will report to the Resource Protection Manager and provide essential primary healthcare services, preventive health education, and emergency medical support. This full-time position is based on-site, offering a unique chance to work in a remote conservation environment while ensuring the well-being of a dedicated ranger force.

Key Responsibilities

• Primary Healthcare: Deliver consultations, diagnose and treat illnesses for staff and families, with a focus on maternal and child health, maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards.
• Health Screening & Surveillance: Conduct routine testing for malaria, HIV, TB, blood pressure, and glucose; implement periodic health checks; support outbreak detection and follow-up care.
• Medication Management: Oversee medical supplies inventory, ensure proper storage and disposal, and coordinate procurement in compliance with regulations.
• First Aid & Emergency Preparedness: Provide general and advanced first aid training, run refresher courses, maintain first aid kits, and prepare teams for medical emergencies.
• Referrals & Continuity of Care: Facilitate referrals to government health facilities, maintain relationships with local clinics, and monitor patient progress.
• Occupational Health: Conduct fitness-for-duty assessments, monitor work-related injuries, support emergency medical response, and advise leadership on health risks.
• Physiotherapy Support: Provide basic rehabilitation, support injury recovery, and educate staff on fitness and injury prevention.
• Data Management: Maintain accurate, confidential patient records, develop medical SOPs, and contribute to health reporting and monitoring.

Candidate Profile

• Education & Licensing: Diploma or Degree in Nursing with a valid practising licence as a Registered Nurse.
• Experience: Minimum three years clinical experience, ideally in remote or rural settings; occupational health, emergency care, or public health experience is advantageous.
• Clinical Skills: Strong knowledge of primary healthcare, preventative medicine, diagnostics, and treatment of common conditions.
• Training Ability: Proven experience delivering first aid training and capacity building for frontline staff.
• Data Proficiency: Skilled in managing health records and contributing to monitoring, evaluation, and reporting.
• Personal Attributes: Excellent organisational and communication skills, integrity, confidentiality, problem-solving aptitude, and resilience to work independently in challenging environments.
