Role Overview for Junior Metallurgist Jobs in Solwezi

The Junior Metallurgist will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of process control measurements and sampling systems across copper cathode, concentrate, and gold circuits. The position primarily focuses on calibrating plant instrumentation, verifying analytical methods, and implementing QA/QC protocols to support metallurgical accounting and process improvements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instrumentation Calibration: Develop and maintain calibration schedules for critical instruments including density meters, flow meters, pH/ORP probes, level sensors, online analyzers, belt weighers, and tankhouse EW instrumentation.
  • Perform and verify calibrations in collaboration with instrumentation and maintenance teams, documenting results and ensuring traceability to certified standards.
  • Analytical QA/QC: Implement and monitor laboratory and online QA/QC protocols, validate analytical methods, investigate assay discrepancies, and maintain compliance with ISO 17025 or equivalent standards.
  • Metallurgical Accounting Support: Ensure accurate mass and metal flow measurements for reconciliation across mine–mill–product streams, audit sampling systems, and support adherence to AMIRA P754 metallurgical accounting principles.
  • Data Integrity & Process Control: Monitor data quality within plant historians and control systems, identify and resolve sensor or signal issues, and support process control enhancements through precise measurement.
  • Continuous Improvement: Lead initiatives to reduce measurement uncertainty, recommend instrumentation upgrades, and prepare calibration and QA/QC performance reports for management.
  • Training & Collaboration: Train operators and metallurgical staff on calibration procedures and data integrity, working closely with maintenance, laboratory, and operations teams to align standards.
  • Adhere to all relevant health, safety, environmental, quality, and regulatory requirements applicable to the role.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy, Mineral Processing, Chemical Engineering, or related field, with all qualifications verified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).
  • 1–2 years’ experience in mineral processing, preferably with exposure to process control and calibration.
  • Knowledge of metal accounting and familiarity with plant instrumentation, sampling theory, and analytical QA/QC practices are advantageous.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Excel and PI System, and understanding of statistical process control is beneficial.
