Position Overview: Hydra Operator

As a Hydra Operator, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of hydraulic/mobile cranes to lift, load, unload, move, and position equipment and materials. You will ensure that all lifting operations adhere strictly to the crane’s rated capacity, approved lifting procedures, and UNO Energies’ rigorous safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities for Hydra Operator Jobs in Zambia

• Operate hydraulic/mobile cranes safely for lifting and positioning heavy loads.
• Perform comprehensive pre-start inspections, including checks on the boom, hook, wire ropes, hydraulics, tyres, brakes, outriggers, controls, and safety devices.
• Ensure the crane is set up on stable ground and outriggers/stabilisers are properly deployed based on load charts.
• Verify load weights and confirm they are within the crane’s rated lifting capacity.
• Interpret crane load charts accurately, considering load capacity, boom length, operating radius, and outrigger configuration.
• Follow lifting plans and instructions provided by Site or Lifting Supervisors.
• Coordinate effectively with riggers, banksmen/signalmen, and other personnel using approved hand signals and communication methods.
• Maintain safe distances from hazards such as power lines, buildings, and vehicles during operations.
• Report any mechanical faults, alarms, damage, or unsafe conditions immediately.
• Conduct routine maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, and inspections.
• Complete all required documentation such as daily inspection sheets and equipment logbooks.
• Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental policies and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
• Halt lifting operations if safety conditions are compromised.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Full Grade 12 School Certificate.
• Valid Driver’s Licence.
• Valid Hydra/Mobile Crane Operator’s Permit or recognized crane operating certification.
• Minimum of 1 to 2 years’ proven experience operating hydraulic/mobile cranes.
• Experience in lifting, loading, unloading, and positioning heavy materials or equipment.
• Ability to read and understand crane load charts and safe operating procedures.
• Knowledge of crane setup, outriggers, lifting capacity, and basic maintenance.
• Strong understanding of occupational health and safety requirements.
• Effective communication skills with riggers, banksmen/signalmen, and supervisors.
• Physically fit, responsible, mature, sober, and safety-conscious.
