African Parks is seeking a dedicated Community Extension Officer to support community engagement and conservation initiatives in Kalabo, Western Province, Zambia. This role is integral to fostering sustainable partnerships between local communities and conservation efforts in the Upper West Zambezi Game Management Area (UWZGMA) and Liuwa Plain National Park. About African Parks and the Role

African Parks is a non-profit conservation organisation managing 24 protected areas across 13 African countries. Our vision is to achieve ecological, financial, and socio-political sustainability in protected areas by actively involving local communities as rights-holders in natural resource management. The Community Extension Officer plays a vital role in supporting this vision by working closely with the Senior Community Extension Officer and other team members to establish and strengthen community relationships and governance structures.

Key Responsibilities of the Community Extension Officer

• Support the establishment of African Parks’ operations in the Upper West Zambezi GMA through stakeholder mapping and community entry processes.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with communities, traditional leaders, government institutions, NGOs, and other partners.
• Facilitate community consultations, awareness campaigns, and meetings to promote participation in conservation and development programmes.
• Assist in implementing community development initiatives such as environmental education, livelihoods support, vocational training, and reproductive health programmes.
• Support the application of Environmental and Social Safeguards, grievance mechanisms, and community governance strengthening.
• Collect and manage monitoring and evaluation data, preparing regular reports on programme progress and community engagement.
• Collaborate with internal teams to deliver integrated community outreach and stakeholder engagement activities.
• Manage project finances and assets responsibly, ensuring proper use and maintenance.
• Provide timely updates to senior officers and perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Wildlife Management, Environmental Conservation, Education, or community-based natural resource management.
• Minimum three years’ experience in community-based conservation, preferably within wildlife conservation sectors.
• Fluent in English and Silozi, with excellent communication skills.
• Valid driving and riding licences, with willingness to work long hours in remote areas and operate a motorbike.
• Proven experience working with NGOs and donor-funded projects, including monitoring and evaluation.
• Strong computer proficiency and ability to handle sensitive information discreetly.
• Sound understanding of local legislation, policies, and regional development opportunities in Western Province.
• Demonstrated stakeholder engagement skills and ability to work effectively across cultures.
