Role Overview: Broodstock Genetic Improvement Superintendent Jobs in Siavonga
As the Broodstock and Genetic Improvement Superintendent, you will be responsible for overseeing the entire hatchery production process, including managing a large broodstock population and implementing selective breeding protocols to enhance genetic lines. You will ensure hatchery sanitation and biosecurity standards are rigorously maintained, supporting Yalelo’s commitment to quality and sustainability. Your leadership will be vital in coordinating supervisors and technical staff to meet ambitious production targets and uphold best practices in fish breeding.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage hatchery production schedules using rotational and modular approaches to consistently achieve a target of 300 million larvae annually.
- Oversee broodstock management of approximately 60,000 female breeders (Generation 09), ensuring adherence to selective breeding protocols and maintaining optimal genetic diversity.
- Maintain daily hatchery sanitation and enforce high biosecurity standards, including rotational disinfection, fully compliant with Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP).
- Provide expert guidance and support to supervisors to ensure quality fry production and efficient operations.
- Conduct daily meetings with supervisors to assess equipment functionality and personnel requirements.
- Review production reports, genetic tracking data, and water quality metrics to identify and implement corrective actions.
- Prepare administrative documentation, including personnel records, hatchability reports, and maintenance logs.
- Lead safety programs and organize regular safety meetings to promote a secure working environment.
- Keep the Hatchery Manager informed with timely updates on production progress, broodstock management, and genetic improvement milestones.
- Ensure proper operation and maintenance of hatchery equipment.
- Train and manage hatchery personnel, fostering a cooperative and productive team culture.
- Supervise technical and labor staff on compliance with BAP standards, animal welfare, and appropriate fish handling techniques.
- Participate in hatchery design, construction, and procedural development to optimize production systems.
- Manage inventories and production supplies efficiently.
- Utilize computerized production data systems for genetic tracking and inventory management.
- Assist in troubleshooting and improving hatchery production processes and systems.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Animal Science, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in aquaculture or hatchery operations, with proven supervisory responsibilities.
- Demonstrated expertise in broodstock management, fish breeding, and fry production.
- Knowledge of genetic improvement programmes and selective breeding methodologies is highly desirable.
- Strong leadership skills with experience managing teams in a production environment.
- Familiarity with hatchery systems, water quality management, and biosecurity protocols.
