Position Overview: Animal Husbandry Officer Jobs in Lusaka

The Animal Husbandry Officer will be responsible for the comprehensive care and management of livestock, ensuring optimal health, nutrition, breeding, and welfare. This role involves monitoring animal behavior, managing sanitation, assisting with births, and implementing disease prevention measures to maximize productivity and animal well-being.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect livestock facilities, farms, and abattoirs to ensure compliance with health and animal welfare regulations.
• Implement and oversee vaccination, disease prevention, and eradication programs.
• Manage and enhance the health, welfare, and productivity of farm animals, with a strong focus on swine management.
• Provide technical support in breeding, feeding, and waste management to optimize production efficiency.
• Maintain detailed records, prepare reports, and contribute to policy development as required.
• Deliver extension services by educating farmers on modern animal husbandry techniques, including breeding, housing, and nutrition.

Qualifications and Skills

• A degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Agriculture, or a related discipline. Degrees from Chinese universities (Bachelor’s or Master’s) are an advantage.
• Grade 12 certificate with at least five O-level credits or equivalent.
• Strong technical knowledge of livestock breeding, animal nutrition, disease management, and good livestock management practices (GLMPs), especially in swine.
• Excellent communication skills for farmer training, strong problem-solving abilities, and proficiency or willingness to learn data collection and analysis.
• Physical fitness to work in field conditions, including remote and rural locations with exposure to varying weather.
• Two to three years of relevant work experience supported by three verifiable references.

Work Environment

Animal Husbandry Officers frequently travel between farms, markets, and offices, balancing hands-on animal care with administrative and regulatory responsibilities. The role often involves collaboration with government agencies and participation in agricultural extension services.
