About the Role: Agronomist Floriculture Jobs in Lusaka South West

Reporting directly to the Farm Manager and Production Director, the Agronomist will play a crucial role in enhancing crop yield and flower quality while promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Your technical guidance will be essential in managing greenhouse and open-ground flower production systems, ensuring compliance with export standards, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

• Crop Production and Quality Management: Develop and implement crop production plans for various cut flowers; monitor plant health, flowering stages, yield, stem strength, vase life, and market readiness; diagnose issues promptly and recommend corrective actions; collaborate with management to enhance productivity and post-harvest handling.
• Sustainable Crop Nutrition, Soil Health, Water, and Irrigation: Guide soil and substrate management, irrigation, fertigation, pruning, hygiene, and harvesting activities; design sustainable fertigation programs aligned with crop needs; promote the use of natural extracts such as Cropsol and Fortafol; apply eco-friendly soil treatments; support water conservation through efficient irrigation and rainwater harvesting; operate within a solar-powered, off-grid farm environment.
• Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPM): Implement monitoring, prevention, and control programs using biological, cultural, mechanical, environmental, and responsible chemical methods; deploy beneficial insects to manage pests; train staff on pest scouting, crop hygiene, safe application practices, and early symptom detection utilizing the Natutec App.
• Records, Compliance, and Continuous Improvement: Maintain detailed records on planting, sprays, fertiliser use, yields, pest and disease occurrences, and overall crop performance; ensure adherence to health, safety, environmental, phytosanitary, and export regulations; support trials of new varieties and technologies; prepare regular agronomic reports and recommendations.

Qualifications and Experience

• Diploma in Agronomy, Agriculture, Horticulture, Crop Science, Plant Science, or a related discipline.
• Minimum of five years’ practical experience in crop farming, preferably within commercial horticulture or floriculture sectors.
• Experience with cut flower varieties such as roses, gerbera, chrysanthemums, or gypsophila is highly desirable.
• Strong expertise in crop nutrition, irrigation, water conservation, sustainable fertigation, IPM, biological controls, soil health, and quality control.
• Familiarity with beneficial insects, natural crop nutrition products, eco-friendly soil treatments, greenhouse and open-ground production systems.
• Knowledge of rainwater harvesting, solar-powered irrigation systems, export standards, phytosanitary requirements, and farm certification is an advantage.
• Basic computer skills for record-keeping, data analysis, and reporting.
