Role Overview for Agroforestry Programmes Coordinator Jobs in Lusaka

The Agroforestry Field Coordinator will take full ownership of designated project areas, overseeing nursery operations, farmer recruitment and training, planting execution, survival monitoring, and stakeholder relations. Reporting to the Global Forestry Programs Coordinator, you will be accountable for delivering agroforestry outcomes and leading a team of Community Development Officers, lead farmers, and field staff. This role requires a proactive leader capable of managing multiple sites with limited supervision while continuously improving programme standards and capacity building.

Key Responsibilities

• Project Area Leadership: Lead and be accountable for nursery output, planting delivery, and seedling survival within your areas. Develop operational plans, budgets, and schedules aligned with organisational targets.
• Nursery and Seedling Management: Oversee nursery siting, propagation, pest control, and dispatch to meet production quotas efficiently and cost-effectively. Implement improvements including decentralised nursery models when applicable.
• Field Execution and Farmer Support: Manage farmer recruitment, training, planting activities, and survival monitoring. Collect and analyse field data to inform operational decisions and promote climate-smart agroforestry practices.
• Team Development and Training: Recruit, coach, and develop nursery and field teams. Design and deliver comprehensive training programmes blending remote and in-person methods, maintaining up-to-date training materials and assessing team competencies.
• Reporting and Coordination: Provide timely reports on production, planting, survival rates, and budgets. Collaborate with carbon, MRV, community engagement, and finance teams to ensure alignment with organisational goals.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Agroforestry, Agriculture, Environmental Science, or a related field; postgraduate qualifications preferred.
• Minimum six years’ experience in agroforestry or forestry extension, including at least three years managing multiple sites and teams.
• Proven success delivering large-scale seedling production and planting targets (one million+ seedlings per season).
• Expertise in agroforestry systems relevant to Zambia, including indigenous species and Miombo woodland management.
• Strong leadership skills with experience in recruiting, coaching, and managing multi-tier teams.
• Experience designing and delivering structured training programmes and managing operational budgets.
• Fluency in English and at least one local language (Bemba, Nyanja, Tonga, or Lozi).
• Valid motorbike licence or willingness to obtain one, with readiness for frequent field travel.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, GIS tools (QGIS, ArcGIS), and mobile data collection platforms like KOBO.
• All certificates must be certified by the Zambia Qualifications Authority (ZAQA).

Desirable Skills

• Experience with carbon projects, reforestation, or smallholder agroforestry programmes in Zambia or the region.
• Familiarity with MRV (monitoring, reporting, verification) for voluntary carbon markets.
• Community engagement experience with gender-sensitive, participatory approaches.
• Competence in remote facilitation tools such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
