About the Agriculture Technology Technician Role
This permanent, full-time position reports directly to the Technical Services Manager. The successful candidate will play a vital role in maintaining and enhancing the technological infrastructure that supports the estate’s agricultural operations. The technician will ensure efficient and safe operation of electronic instrumentation, control systems, and communication networks critical to farm productivity.
Key Responsibilities for Agriculture Technology Technician Jobs in Mazabuka
- Provide technical support and guidance to team members and other departments.
- Interpret technical drawings, datasheets, schematics, and manuals to troubleshoot complex communications, control, and instrumentation issues.
- Perform routine and planned maintenance on field electronics, instrumentation, control systems, and pump station controllers.
- Maintain and calibrate instruments including flow meters, temperature and pressure sensors, controlled traffic systems, variable speed drives, weather stations, soil moisture probes, and rain gauges.
- Manage OT network monitoring systems and ensure dashboards are operational and current.
- Maintain communication networks on site, including instrumentation networks and radio systems such as RTK and LoRaWAN.
- Maintain and modify P&ID and instrumentation drawings as required.
- Support technical drone maintenance and backup power supply systems (UPS).
- Collaborate closely with the IT department to ensure connectivity and access for OT networks.
- Adhere to Illovo’s policies and safety standards, promoting a safe working environment for personnel and machinery.
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively under pressure while upholding company values of accountability, integrity, empowerment, commitment, and inclusiveness.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Competences
- Basic programming knowledge in languages such as JavaScript and familiarity with IDEs like Visual Studio.
- Understanding of operating systems including Windows and Linux.
- Familiarity with communication protocols such as MQTT and REST.
- Knowledge of radio networks including Wi-Fi and LoRaWAN.
- Basic PLC programming and serial communication protocols like Modbus TCP and RTU.
- Experience with analogue and digital communications (4-20mA, PT100 sensors, opto-isolated inputs, open collector outputs).
- Basic understanding of GIS and GPS systems such as RTK for controlled traffic management.
- Networking knowledge including VLANs, PoE, and managed switches.
- Familiarity with software tools such as NODE RED, Postman, Google Earth, MQTTX, and serial communication utilities like Termite and Modbus Master.
Qualifications and Experience
- Grade 12 certificate.
- Diploma or NTA Level 6 qualification in Electronic, Electrical, Instrumentation Engineering, or Internet of Things from a recognized institution.
- Proven knowledge in electrical, electronic, and instrumentation circuits including fault diagnosis and rectification.
- Minimum of three years’ relevant work experience.
- Membership of the Engineering Institute of Zambia is required.
