Position Overview for Accountant Jobs in Chikankata
Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Accountant will be responsible for overseeing all accounting, finance, payroll, statutory compliance, and financial reporting functions. This is a full-time role requiring a hands-on approach, as it represents the sole accounting position within MIC’s lean organizational structure. The successful candidate will manage everything from routine transaction processing to preparing management accounts, annual financial statements, budgeting, audit support, and Board reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer and maintain the company’s accounting system, ensuring complete and accurate daily records.
- Capture, classify, and verify all financial transactions; maintain ledgers, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
- Prepare monthly management accounts, periodic financial reports, and annual financial statements for management and Board review.
- Conduct monthly bank reconciliations, promptly investigating discrepancies and maintaining comprehensive banking records.
- Manage accounts payable and receivable, including supplier/customer reconciliations and debtor/creditor monitoring.
- Prepare payroll, issue payslips, resolve payroll queries, and maintain complete employee payment records.
- Ensure timely preparation, submission, and follow-up of all statutory returns and remittances with a reliable compliance calendar.
- Prepare payment vouchers, process authorized online banking payments, and file proofs of payment and bank statements.
- Administer petty cash with proper authorization, documentation, reconciliation, and replenishment.
- Issue official receipts, account for company funds, and ensure prompt banking and recording of receipts.
- Prepare and monitor budgets, cash-flow forecasts, and funding schedules; report variances and risks to the General Manager.
- Maintain accurate records of company assets, liabilities, and inventory-related financial transactions.
- Liaise with external auditors, providing complete and timely information for audit processes.
- Attend Board meetings to present financial reports, answer queries, and offer practical financial advice.
- Maintain professional relationships with banks, statutory bodies, suppliers, customers, farmers, and other stakeholders.
- Ensure secure, confidential financial file management and perform additional accounting duties as required.
Qualifications and Experience
- A Degree or Diploma in Accounting from a recognized institution.
- Minimum of five years’ experience in accounting, financial management, or a related role.
- Strong knowledge of applicable accounting standards, Zambian tax laws, payroll requirements, and statutory regulations.
- Proven expertise in transaction processing, reconciliations, payroll, statutory compliance, budgeting, and financial reporting.
- Proficiency in QuickBooks or the ability to adapt quickly to the accounting software adopted by MIC.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word, and familiarity with online banking systems.
- Membership in ZICA or another recognized professional accounting body is advantageous.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, and report-writing skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- High integrity, accuracy, accountability, confidentiality, and the ability to work independently under deadlines.
- Fluency in English and willingness to live and work in the Manyonyo/Chikankata area.
