Role Overview: ESG Officer Jobs in Lusaka

The ESG Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring ASA Microfinance Zambia’s ESG strategy and programs. This role acts as the central point for all ESG-related activities, including stakeholder engagement, impact measurement, and reporting. The successful candidate will ensure the organization meets its social responsibility commitments and adheres to environmental and governance frameworks aligned with international best practices such as IFC Performance Standards, UN SDGs, and GRI Standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • ESG Strategy & Policy Development: Formulate and update comprehensive ESG policies and frameworks, securing approval from senior leadership and integrating ESG into institutional planning and budgeting.
  • Environmental Management: Monitor ASA’s environmental footprint, develop management plans to reduce impact, and conduct risk assessments for lending activities.
  • Social Performance & Client Protection: Lead social performance initiatives, implement client protection principles, and coordinate gender equality and CSR programs.
  • Governance & Compliance: Support corporate governance standards, maintain ESG risk registers, and coordinate due diligence for investors and donors.
  • Reporting & Impact Measurement: Establish data collection systems, prepare ESG reports and dashboards, and facilitate external ESG assessments.
  • Staff Capacity Building: Design and deliver ESG training programs to foster a culture of responsibility and ethical conduct across all levels of staff.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the primary liaison with investors, regulators, NGOs, and represent ASA Zambia at relevant ESG forums.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Development Studies, Economics, Business Administration, Social Sciences, or related fields.
  • Postgraduate qualification (Master’s or equivalent) in Sustainability Management, ESG, Development Finance, or similar is highly advantageous.
  • At least 10 years of experience in ESG and sustainable development, preferably within microfinance, banking, or financial services.
  • Professional certifications such as GRI Certified Sustainability Professional, UNPRI training, CFA ESG Certificate, or equivalent are desirable.
  • Membership in professional bodies like the Zambia Institute of Environmental Management or Zambia Institute of Bankers is an added benefit.
  • Strong knowledge of ESG frameworks including GRI, IFC, SASB, TCFD, UN SDGs, and Social Performance Management standards.
  • Excellent analytical, research, and data interpretation skills with experience in surveys, social audits, and benchmarking.
