Superintendent, Mechanical (Mobile Equipment & Plant Continuous Improvement)
First Quantum Minerals invites qualified professionals to apply for an exciting opportunity in mechanical superintendent jobs in Solwezi. This full-time position is based at the Kansanshi Mine Plc Smelter Plant in Solwezi, Northwestern Zambia, where you will lead mechanical engineering operations focused on mobile equipment and continuous improvement initiatives, ensuring safe, efficient production.
About the Role
As the Mechanical Superintendent, you will oversee day-to-day mechanical engineering operations and resources within the mobile equipment and continuous improvement section of the smelter plant. You will also champion the proficiency framework across the smelter, driving operational excellence and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety, environmental, quality, finance, and human resources policies and regulations relevant to the role.
- Enhance the mechanical department’s organizational structure and lead recruitment to meet business needs.
- Set, review, and manage departmental targets aligned with business objectives.
- Oversee procurement of mechanical spares to minimize operational downtime risks.
- Assess mechanical asset inventory and develop maintenance systems to maximize equipment availability.
- Prepare and manage operating and capital refurbishment budgets for mechanical assets.
- Schedule and execute periodic refurbishment to maintain equipment operating integrity.
- Support commissioning activities in collaboration with operational and project teams.
- Plan and monitor mechanical maintenance shutdowns for smelter mobile equipment.
- Regularly review and update the mechanical engineering strategy to align with business goals.
- Manage mechanical resources to ensure efficient maintenance execution at minimal cost.
- Enforce adherence to engineering standards and take corrective actions when necessary.
- Lead and mentor the mechanical team to foster a culture of continuous improvement.
- Drive continuous improvement projects, including engineering design reviews within the smelter.
- Assist the Engineering Manager in implementing systems to maintain site performance, safety, and environmental compliance.
- Participate in developing annual service level agreements with contractors and production departments.
- Implement the proficiency framework by identifying and facilitating training and development opportunities, focusing on local employee growth.
- Conduct quarterly performance reviews of key talent, monitor KPIs, and provide ongoing coaching and counseling.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
- Full registration with the Engineering Registration Board or an equivalent external engineering regulatory body is mandatory.
- Previous experience as an engineer in a smelter environment is advantageous.
- At least 10 years of experience in base metal process operations is preferred.
- Extensive experience maintaining mobile equipment such as slag hauler carriers, dozers, front-end loaders, articulated dump trucks, excavators, and forklifts.
- Familiarity with process plant equipment including brick-lined furnaces, overhead cranes, gas cleaning plants, multistage and screw air compressors, low-pressure blowers, and centrifugal fans.
- General knowledge of infrastructure design is desirable.
