Role Overview for Senior Distribution Engineer Jobs in Lusaka

Reporting to the Technical Director within the Technical Directorate, the Senior Distribution Engineer will provide technical oversight for ZamGridCo-funded electrification projects. This includes reviewing and validating design proposals, bid specifications, and contractor implementation plans, as well as certifying milestones before funding disbursement. The role ensures infrastructure such as lines, substations, and last-mile connections meet project funding requirements, national standards, and cost-effectiveness criteria. Serving as the key technical liaison among funding recipients, contractors, and ZamGridCo, the position also supports the Technical Advisory Committee and Board on technical and risk matters.

Key Responsibilities

• Technical Due Diligence & Project Funding Design (Pre-Award): Review proposals for distribution upgrades and mini-grids, validate load forecasts and compliance, recommend cost ceilings, support capital investment planning, and participate in bid evaluations.
• Project Implementation Oversight (Post-Award): Approve engineering designs and tender documents, monitor construction quality and safety, conduct site audits, and verify bills of quantities.
• Compliance & Reporting: Certify technical deliverables for funding disbursement, document deviations and cost overruns, and prepare technical annexes for development partner reports.
• Capacity Building & Policy Support: Develop simplified design guides and tender templates, advise on cost-effective electrification strategies and technology choices.
• Stakeholder Coordination: Liaise with ZESCO, regulators, contractors, and communities, and resolve technical disputes related to wayleaves, earthing, or protection coordination.

Qualifications and Experience

• Required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (Power major)
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or equivalent registration (e.g., CEng, Ing.)
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in power distribution engineering, including at least 3 years managing donor- or government-funded grants
  • Membership in the Engineering Institution of Zambia and registration with The Engineers Registration Board of Zambia
• Preferred:
  • Master’s Degree in Energy Systems or Management
  • Experience with off-grid distribution, prepaid metering, or smart grid technologies
  • Familiarity with FIDIC contracts, AfDB procurement processes, and environmental safeguards
  • Willingness to travel up to 40% to rural project sites in a hybrid office-based role

Skills and Competencies

• Proficiency with distribution planning and design software such as AutoCAD Electrical, PLS-CADD, OpenDSS, CYME, DIgSILENT Power Factory, or PowerGLF
• Knowledge of IEEE, IEC, or national distribution standards
• Understanding of results-based financing (RBF) or performance-based grants
• Strong report writing, remote supervision, and conflict resolution skills in resource-limited environments
