Role Overview for Biomedical Engineering Technologist Volunteer Jobs in Kalumbila

Reporting to the Biomedical and Clinic Manager, the volunteer Biomedical Engineer is responsible for managing the maintenance and safety of all medical equipment used for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. This includes preparing and executing preventive maintenance schedules, maintaining essential spare parts inventory, and troubleshooting equipment issues promptly to avoid disruptions in patient care.

The role also involves supporting the acquisition and installation of new medical devices, ensuring compliance with hospital safety programs such as radiation and medical gas systems safety, and conducting in-service education and training for equipment users. Regular reporting and analysis of equipment failures, root causes, and human factors are essential components of this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate equipment inventories and manage maintenance schedules
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance to ensure equipment functionality and safety
  • Support quality assurance processes and hospital safety programs
  • Assist with the acquisition, installation, and commissioning of new medical equipment
  • Provide user training and in-service education on medical equipment usage and safety
  • Investigate equipment failures and recommend corrective actions
  • Ensure compliance with radiation safety and medical gas system protocols
  • Prepare detailed reports and analyses for management review

Qualifications and Skills

  • Grade 12 Certificate
  • Diploma in Biomedical Engineering, Electronics, Instrumentation, or equivalent
  • Diagnostic skills related to hospital instruments and medical equipment
  • Proficient IT skills
  • Strong command of written and spoken English
  • Excellent judgment, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Customer-focused with a professional and service-minded approach

  • Willingness to travel to other MBHS facilities as required

The volunteer is expected to produce accurate, reliable reports with a clear audit trail, meeting the standards set by the Biomedical Engineering Manager. Maintaining high-quality work and ensuring patient safety through rigorous equipment management is paramount.
