Role Overview for Associate Director Human Resources Jobs in Mumbwa

As Associate Director – Human Resources, you will supervise HR Managers across multiple countries in Africa to ensure consistent, high-quality talent management practices. Acting as the primary HR advisor for designated client groups, you will provide expert guidance to supervisors and employees, interpret policies, and ensure compliance with The Nature Conservancy’s policies and local labor laws. This role requires discretion, sound judgment, and an understanding of complex organizational dynamics. Reporting to the HR Director, Africa, you will also support the design and implementation of staff development programs and risk mitigation strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide operational HR leadership and support to People managers, HR managers, and teams on talent management.
  • Serve as the main HR contact for a designated client group, ensuring tailored HR service delivery.
  • Supervise HR Managers to implement localized HR programs and policies effectively.
  • Oversee annual compensation and equity reviews across Africa, maintaining fairness and alignment with global standards.
  • Advise on employee relations matters to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition Specialists on recruitment strategies for mid-to-senior and critical roles.
  • Lead initiatives to boost employee engagement, retention, and professional development.
  • Foster a positive team culture through team-building and collaborative activities.
  • Monitor employment law changes across jurisdictions and ensure organizational compliance.
  • Manage performance management processes and merit planning.
  • Escalate complex HR issues to the HR Director for resolution as needed.
  • Travel across Africa may be required, with occasional evening or weekend commitments.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least 8 years of experience in Human Resources Management as a HR Generalist.
  • Proven ability to build consultative relationships and influence leadership at all levels.
  • HR certification preferred (e.g., AIHR, CHRP, PHR, SHRM-CP).
  • Experience leading and supervising HR teams.
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to handle sensitive HR matters effectively.
  • Advanced knowledge of core HR principles, processes, and services.
  • Demonstrated project coordination and leadership capabilities.
  • Ability to respond to complex HR inquiries and maintain HR guidelines and processes.

Preferred Skills and Attributes

  • Multilingual abilities, particularly in French and/or Portuguese, and cross-cultural experience.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Willingness and ability to travel within Africa.
  • Flexibility in adapting to changing priorities and environments.
  • Interest in developing and improving HR systems and processes within a growing program.
  • Capacity to manage multiple projects and drive long-term initiatives supporting team and program success.
  • Sound decision-making skills in situations with limited information.
